All Vows

Puppet Memory Play

All Vows is a diasporic memory play about inheritance, myth-making, and the possibly true life of my grandfather, Poppy, a Jewish refugee who grew up in China.

We didn’t talk much about my Poppy growing up, but I was always proud of what I knew about him: how he grew up in China after his family fled the Russian Revolution, how he taught himself Italian while in medical school in Bologna, how he became a surgeon in Shanghai before fleeing again, this time for America at the dawn of the Cultural Revolution. His was a story of resilience, worldliness, and drive. And since he died when I was four, I was content with its broad strokes—until an old photo re-surfaced last year, leading me to question just about every memory I had of the man.

The show features five puppet portraits of Poppy throughout his life, accompanied by spoken text, recorded interviews with my father, and home video footage

All Vows was developed with support from the Jim Henson Foundation, St. Ann’s Warehouse, and the Morris Museum. It premiered in May, 2022.
